The National Firey Food Show (and a giveaway!)

I learned some very valuable information yesterday.  I learned that when you are eating spicy food you should:

A.  Not put it right on the tip of your tongue, or your lips

B.  Not swallow it right away

C.  Try a little bit first

D.  Have something to take the pain away close at hand (i.e. milk, water, chips, ketchup?)

I wish I had learned these things BEFORE I started cramming samples into my face.  I spent about a full hour all sweaty with a runny nose because I didn’t know those things.  Words to live by.

Either way, I had a great time at the National Fiery Foods Show yesterday.  I got to try a ton of deliciosities, and made some new friendsies too.  The best part is, you get to benefit from my trip to the show.  My 3 favorite vendors were generous enough to provide me with a slew of home crafted delights which I will be passing on to y’all (I am not southern, but it seems appropriate here… don’t judge).

Let me tell you a little bit about the awesome guys I met at the show and what they do, and then we’ll move on to what you can win from them.

All Spice Cafe

John and JD hail from sunny Venice, CA.  During college JD discovered a deep and burning love for hot wings, but found that nothing had that certain special spice he was looking for.  So he began to experiment like a mad spice genius to cultivate what they now call the All Spice Cafe’s Cayenne Habanero Sauce.  Yummo.  Though he started out feeding his creations to family and friends, JDs sauces ultimately won him the title of “Best Hot-Sauce Maker” from LA Magazine.  Cheea… pepper royalty.

And apparently genius loves company, because soon JD found himself a partner in pepper-crime named John Lesco.  John came from a sort of similar fiery background, and also loved to experiment and craft spicy perfection.  He was the mastermind behind the Sweet Habanero Popcorn (which happened to be my absolute favorite thing from the whole show, and that is saying a lot).  John spends a lot of his time behind the scenes of the operation, blogging, tweeting and facebooking his heart out.

Together these marvelous men make up All Spice Cafe.  Their creations have won numerous awards, which have generated them barbecue fame nationwide.   They generously donated not one but TWO bags of sweet chile popcorn for me to give away.  It’s really sweet and just spicy enough for you to know it’s in there.  They ALSO donated a big ol’ bottle of Chipotle Garlic Sauce, which is one of their most recent best-sellers.  Keep it up boys!  Click here to learn more about All Spice Cafe.  You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter

Coal Gulch Trading Company

Coal Gulch is a small business that got its start right here in New Mexico.  In fact, the whole operation resides in the small town of Madrid, which you may remember from last week’s post about the Turquoise Trail.  I L-O-V-E the name of this company, because it really embodies its roots.  Scott, the founder and taste-maker of Coal Gulch, got his start in spice very early on.  Scott is an Albuquerque native (so we KNOW he likes it hot!), who remembers cooking with his grandma when he was young.  By the age of 10 he was already surprising Grandma with his cooking skills.  Cooking continued to be a hobby for him into adulthood, and after many other jobs, difficulties, trials and travails along the way, he became a full time cooking connoisseur.

Scott’s love for where he’s from and what he does really show through in his personality (and in his food).  At the show, I tested out the Cranberry Habanero Glaze, the Apricot Habanero Glaze, and the Miner’s Habanero Mustard (which we will be giving away).  Everything was soooooo good (the glazes were crazy hot right out of the bottle, but mixed with cream cheese were perfect for my timid tongue).  The mustard is A-Mazing.  It starts out just like normal mustard, and then gives you a little kick of spice right at the end.  It would be great for sandwiches, pretzels, fries, hot dogs, pretty much anything in the world that is dippable or condiment-able.  If you want to find out more about Coal Gulch Trading Company, you can do it right here!

Warning! Salsa

The guys at the Warning! Salsa booth were pretty much just way cool.  They became fast friends.  Their salsas have won gobs of awards, and it’s not hard to see why.  I sampled the Fire Roasted Salsa, and it knocked my socks off.  It’s like normal salsa, only ten times better. I have no idea how they make it so good. I was about ready to eat this bottle that they gave me to give away, so thank your lucky stars that I didn’t because it would have been a sad sad day for whoever wins this prize package.  Their other salsas have all won first prizes and various awards, but this one is so new that it hasn’t even been entered in any competitions yet.  The winner of this prize will be on the forefront of salsa glory.  You can learn more about Warning! Salsa here at their website.

in another post you wrote you never went on a mine trip until you were moving out of Colorado. That is funny to me because I never liked spicy food or green chile until I moved out of New Mexico.
